A bit of background
I began to properly explore plant-based medicine when I returned to study, 7 years ago. At the time, I had worked for nearly 10 years in a busy media career, at companies such as Facebook and Pinterest as well as for various brands and media agencies. Unbeknownst to me, the impact of city life and a stressful job was taking a toll on my health. I had always had a lot of energy, but I was becoming increasingly hyperactive with terrible insomnia. Ultimately, stress was impacting my body causing a domino effect of symptoms and other conditions arose; weight loss, hormone imbalance and anxiety to name a few. I had always been very healthy and as nothing I was experiencing was immediately debilitating, I opted for quick fixes and didn’t look to solve the root cause of my health issues. Largely because I didn’t have time, didn’t prioritise them and didn’t really think they were that serious.
On the rare occasion I did seek help, the answers I was getting just didn’t make sense to me and no one seemed interested in understanding or treating the original cause. I knew I didn’t want to patch my body up with pharmaceuticals that merely masked the symptoms but, in all honesty, I wasn’t putting the work in either; prioritising my life and career over my health. Now I recognise the obvious, that all things start with good health.
Around this time, I had also noticed the increase in prescription medication amongst family and friends. Prescriptions that defied logic and resulted in additional health problems. So, I looked for another way.
My fascination with nature began as a child and from a young age I wanted to be outside exploring, trying to understand, test and experience everything. Plants and trees were something I loved in particular. Coming from an Irish background, there was an emphasis on natural medicine. Living closely with the land is just something that is more inherent there. I also noticed how plants and nature were able to change my mood and the mood of people around me, promoting calm or more energy and ultimately supporting mental health and wellbeing. This has been acknowledged by many cultures, the Japanese in particular have incorporated Shinrin Yoku (Forest Bathing) as one of the cornerstones of their preventative health system.
Modern medicine is incredible for treating acute, emergency situations but is challenged when it comes to dealing with chronic disease; illness that has developed over time. I’ll be forever grateful for the doctors who saved my dad when he had meningitis but in our modern society, chronic disease is rife and there has to be another approach. This is largely due to the increase in stress and changes in our environment. The world is changing. We're living a lot longer and disease is manifesting itself in different ways due to the different threats we face in the modern age. In particular, stress, chemicals, modern technology and pollution. Pharmaceuticals alone are unable to deal with this and the ideal is that we all work together to optimise health and vitality. Longer life is great, but it should be a long life that is free from disease as far as is possible.
In 2016, I graduated as a qualified Naturopath, Iridologist and Herbalist with 500 hours of evaluated clinic experience and many more through professional practice. I am also a member of the Association of Naturopathic Practitioners and accredited by the Association of Master Herbalists. Following a brief return to my marketing career, in April 2019 I founded iNaturopath.
I am currently working with community gardens, charities, corporates and individuals. Mainly based in Central and South East London with intermittent travel to explore and expand knowledge.
